Nigeria
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has buttressed claims by leaders of the country’s legislature that there was no cause for alarm relative to his health. Leaders of the Senate and House of representatives visited him last week in London, where he is on extended medical vacation.
The septuagenarian thanked Nigerians – Christians and Muslims – for their prayers and good wishes in a message issued by Femi Adesina, a senior adviser on media and publicity.
‘‘The President is immensely grateful for the prayers, show of love and concern. President Buhari wishes to reassure Nigerians that there is no cause for worry.
‘‘During his normal annual checkup, tests showed he needed a longer period of rest, necessitating the President staying longer than originally planned,’‘ the statement added.
President Muhammadu Buhari left for Britain a month ago after notifying the Senate that he had transferred power to his Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo – who has since been acting in the capacity of acting president.
Whiles on vacation he has met party big wigs and some governors who paid him a visit at his residence. He also had a telephone conversation with his US counterpart, Donald John Trump.
Last year, Buhari flew to London to meet a specialist over an ear infection according to the presidency. In this case however, they have failed to disclose the particular illness he is suffering from.
Nigeria’s presidency has a history of a president dieng in office. The case of the Late Umar Yar’Adua back in 2010 was deemed to have created a power vacuum because the legislature was not notified of transfer of power to the then Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan.
Jonathan went on to complete Yar’Adua’s term before winning his first term. He lost a second term bid to Buhari in 2015. At the time Buhari was standing for the third time under the aegis of a mega party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
